Fun for Everyone
Thousands of visitors poured onto the Berry campus for the annual celebration of founder Martha Berry’s birthday known as Mountain Day.
Berry’s one-of-a-kind homecoming spectacular got under way Friday afternoon with a golf scramble for alumni and friends at Coosa Country Club, and the rollicking fun and pageantry of the Mountain Day Olympics for students, faculty and staff. Later Friday, students had the opportunity to display their talents in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, presented by the Berry College Theatre Company, and the Mountain Day Talent Show.
The excitement continued Saturday morning with the Mountain Day 5K/Health Walk and a chapel service featuring 1985 alumna Terri Colson Earls as guest speaker. Attention then shifted to the mountain campus, where thousands gathered for a picnic lunch and the “Grand March” of students, one of Berry’s most enduring traditions.
Reunion activities and athletic events kept the momentum going throughout the rest of the afternoon. Once the sun went down, all roads led to Marthapalooza, a new Mountain Day tradition that enjoyed unprecedented success in its third year of existence, drawing an estimated 2,000 visitors – many of them students – to the Clara Bowl adjacent to the Ford Complex for a late-night carnival that stretched into the early hours of Sunday morning. Joining in on the fun was actor Dennis Haskins (Mr. Belding) of Saved by the Bell fame.
