Berry College Archives: Your Gateway to the History of Berry College

The Berry College Oral History Project

The Berry College Oral History Project began in its current form in 1988, with responsibility for the project falling to the public relations office. The initial purpose of the project was to focus on people who knew Martha Berry and to record their memories of her and their impressions of her personality. The public relations office identified and interviewed key alumni, Berry family members, and former faculty, staff and trustees.

The current oral history project builds on interviews conducted in 1964 with key players in Berry’s past. These interviews remain some of the most important anecdotal information about Martha Berry.

The archives became involved in the project in 1992. To date, there have been a total of 155 interviews conducted and 138 total participants. The interviews have been transcribed and the transcriptions are available for use by researchers.

At this time, plans are underway to begin a project to document sports at Berry and to document the 60s and 70s (times of change) at Berry.

See a list of interviews done in the Oral History Project either by subject decade or by interviewee name.
