BCEMS History and Timeline

  • 1977-‘08:  Established with a Lilly Foundation grant and called the Early Learning Center in the Westcott Building.  Served grades  K & 1.  School is originally structured to follow British enfant school practices.  
  • 1978-‘09:  Added 2nd grade (K-2nd)  
  • 1979-‘80:  Added 3rd grade (K-3rd)  
  • 1980-‘81:  Added 4th grade (K-4th)  
  • 1986-‘87:  Added 5th grade (K-5th)  
  • 1987-‘88:  Moved to historic Hamrick Hall (present day location)  
  • 1988-‘89:  Name changed to Berry Laboratory School  
  • 1995-‘96:  Name changed to Berry College Elementary School  
  • 1998-‘99:  Added 6th grade (K-6th)  
  • 2000-‘01:  Added 7th grade (K-7th)  
  • 2001-‘02:  Added 8th grade (K-8th)  
  • 2001-‘02:  The historic Barstow building was adopted by the elementary school (Middle grades housed in Barstow until the Cook Building facilities were completed)  
  • 2002-‘03:  6th, 7th & 8th grades – multi-age middle school classes were moved to the Cook Building on the main Berry College campus alongside the Charter School of Education and Human Science.  
  • 2002-‘03:  School library relocated to Barstow Library building.  
  • 2006-‘07:  Grades 7 & 8 adopt leadership roles as weekly assembly monitors and leaders of our monthly Viking assembly held at Frost Chapel.  Golden Oars ceremony and traditions are adopted.  H3O (Head, Heart & Hands Organization) is introduced and school-wide service learning projects are initiated to complement class service learning projects.  The BCEMS Booster Association is formed.  
  • 2007-‘08:  The BCEMS 30th Anniversary is honored through a series of reunion events and visits from former students, parents, teachers and directors.  The Middle School is reorganized with 5th, 6th, 7th & 8th grades utilizing both the Hamrick Hall & Cook Building facilities.  A fully departmentalized program is implemented for grades 7 and 8.  
  • 2007-08:  BCEMS creates the first annual Berry Half Marathon & 5K.  This event attracts dozens of sponsors and nearly 800 runners in its first year!   
  • 2008-09:  New mobile laptop labs are integrated into instruction and Smartboards are installed in every classroom.  Hamrick Hall and Barstow Library get a facelift.
