Now in his ninth season at the helm of the Berry Lady Viking program, Lorenzo Canalis has established himself as one of the most successful soccer coaches in the NAIA. He also has the highest winning percentage of any coach in the history of Berry women's soccer. Canalis has been coaching on the intercollegiate level for 22 years, the last eight here at Berry College. Canalis has compiled a 133-35-11 record at Berry, winning one Georgia Athletic Conference title, six TranSouth Conference titles, and four NAIA Regional Championships, and he has led Berry to six NAIA National Tournament appearances. In 1997, the Lady Vikings earned a third place finish at the NAIA National Tournament. Canalis has won numerous coaching awards, including Mid-South Region Coach of the Year in 1996 and 1998, and six TranSouth Conference Coach of the Year awards (1996-1999 and 2001-2002.) His overall record coaching women's college soccer is 194-74-17. Canalis has also been active in promoting and teaching women's soccer on other levels as well. In addition to coordinating several youth soccer camps on the Berry campus each summer, he is also a coach for the U-18 Georgia Olympic Development team. Canalis is also the NAIA Regional Chair for women's soccer, and he is past president of the NAIA Women's Soccer Coaches Association. A native of Torino, Italy, Canalis holds an NSCAA Advanced National Coaching diploma, and he earned a bachelor of science degree in accounting from Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He earned a master's degree in sport science and management from the United States Sports Academy, and he currently teaches in the department of kinesiology at Berry. He is married to the former Janda Thoeni of Monticello, Iowa, and they have two children, Ian and Amy.
