Tips by Class

Freshmen

  1. Finish your foreign language requirement--proof of competence at the intermediate level (FLA 200) as soon as possible. Reason: FLA courses are 4-hour courses. 3 hours are on MWF at one time of day; the fourth is on a TH day at a particular hour. This means your FLA courses take up two slots each week. The chances of your FLA course conflicting with your COM (major) courses are all too likely. You want to avoid such conflicts.
  2. Don’t worry about taking any COM courses. If you can, take COM 201. If not, no problem. You can take this in any year before you graduate. If you are able to take COM 301 (Reporting and Writing), go ahead and do so.
  3. SAVE EVERYTHING you write in COM 301 for your portfolio.

Sophomores

  1. Try your best to take COM 301 (Reporting and Writing), COM 300 (Visual Rhetoric) and COM 303 (Editing) during this year. You will need to take COM 301 first (Fall) and the others later (Spring). All three of these courses are prerequisites for COM 305.
  2. Try to get at least one “concentration” (Journalism, PR, VisCom) course, if you can.
  3. SAVE EVERYTHING you write or create in COM 301, COM 300, COM 303 and COM 305 for your portfolio.

Juniors

  1. See sophomore tips. Make sure you have completed all these courses ASAP.
  2. As soon as you have completed 60 hours toward graduation, be sure to make an appointment with the Registrar’s office to complete a UGP—Undergraduate Degree Plan. This “plan” will tell you: what courses you have taken so far, and what other courses you will need to graduate.
  3. If you have a PR concentration, be sure to take COM 375 (Principles of Public Relations) no later than Fall of your junior year.  Most PR concentration electives have COM 375 as a pre-requisite.

Seniors

  1. Very important: at the very beginning of your senior year (usually fall)—complete your application for graduation. This document will list in one column: what courses you are taking in the Fall; in the next column: what courses you must take in the Spring. This is your guarantee: if you take the Spring courses, you will graduate.
  2. Generally, all seniors take COM 450. Please review the portfolio requirements for COM 450 to make sure you are ready for this course.
