English, Rhetoric, and Writing
Writing Concentration
Concentration in writing complements the English core by emphasizing the symbiotic relationship between reading and writing, between creation and appreciation. Courses are offered in introductory and advanced poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, as well as in expository writing and play writing. Tutorials in any genre are available for the advanced undergraduate writer. While Berry’s beautiful, 26,000-acre campus offers the student writer valuable opportunities for solitude and retreat, its small community of highly dedicated student and faculty writers provides many occasions to share and discuss creative work, both inside and outside the classroom. Each year, the Department of English, Rhetoric and Writing Reading Series brings writers of national and international reputation to campus for readings and to meet with writing students. Recent visiting writers include Billy Collins, Kim Addonizio, Dave Smith, Allison Joseph, Marianne Boruch and Charles Wright.
