English, Rhetoric, and Writing

First Year Writing Program

Berry College has made a commitment to matriculate students who possess “excellence in thinking and writing.” The Berry College Writing Program initiates that goal by using writing to engage students in the intellectual, ethical, and reflective experiences central to liberal arts education. The program espouses a rhetorical philosophy in which students work closely with faculty to develop, evaluate, and effectively communicate their own ideas for a variety of academic, professional, and civic audiences. In addition to sharpening their existing skills in reading and research, students use expository essays and other modes of written inquiry to cultivate the analytical and rhetorical facilities needed to forge arguable perspectives on issues of historical and contemporary importance. As a core component of Berry College’s general education curriculum, the First-Year Writing Program is thus committed to helping students become active, independent thinkers who participate meaningfully in diverse academic and cultural conversations.
