The
art history program is general in the scope of course offerings,
and it is specific in terms of meeting the needs upper level students.
Courses are offered in all major periods of western art including
Greek and Roman, Medieval and Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo, Nineteenth
Century, Early Twentieth Century, and Post WWII art.
Other art history courses
include Women and Art, Pre-Columbian and Latin American Art, and
Irish Art, as well as credit for study trips to New York and Florence.
Students explore specific art historical interests for the Senior
Thesis paper, which can be historical (research paper), curatorial
(exhibition catalogue), or critical (contemporary art criticism),
in nature.
The art history program
has a strong writing component; students become proficient at writing
formal research papers that incorporate scholarship and innovative
thinking. Art history students also learn the fundamental principles
and elements of two- and three-dimensional design though studio
art courses in the core curriculum.
Art history students
are encouraged to participate in the college's extensive study abroad
program. Berry College students can explore opportunities within
the field of art history by participating in internship programs,
such as the curatorial internship offered at the Martha Berry Museum
on campus, and Rome Area Council for the Arts. Berry College sponsors
an excellent cultural events program. Students are encouraged to
attend guest lectures, seminars with visiting scholars and artists,
and performing arts events, as well as field trips to regional exhibitions
and lectures. In addition, the Moon Gallery in the art building
has monthly regional, national, and international art exhibitions,
as well as Senior exhibitions, all of which add significantly to
the success of the art history program at Berry College. |
