Government & International Studies
Government is a crucial element of a liberal arts education. Which is just a fancy way of saying that if you want to be a thoughtful and self-aware citizen, you need to carefully study how different communities manage conflict, seek justice, and make collective decisions—both when made for the public good and also when made for the benefit of the rulers and the powerful.
Government at Berry College is a rigorous discipline taught by faculty members who have won accolades and awards for their teaching and scholarship both locally and nationally. The department’s high standards and rigor has paid off handsomely for students, as the department has placed our graduating majors and minors in top-quality graduate schools, law school programs, and in promising careers in the public and private sectors.
Our students participate firsthand in a variety of Government Department-sponsored activities both inside and outside the classroom. Students have held internships at the local, state, and national levels of government--for members of Congress, Washington D.C.-based think tanks, the President’s Council on Bio-Ethics, and in executive departments.
In some instances, those internships have led to employment upon graduation. The department’s Model United Nations program routinely ranks among the top programs in the nation, and it is a popular draw. Students from across campus participate along with our majors in the Politics and Law Society, the Young Democrats, College Republicans, Pre-Law Society, and the Churchill Society (in which students discuss current events and the finer things in life over a cigar).
