Biography

Eric Sands joined the Department of Government in the Fall of 2006 after receiving his Ph.D. in Government from the University of Virginia.  Dr. Sands has taught a wide range of courses, including Introduction to American Government, Parties and Elections, the American Presidency, Congress, Literature and Politics, American Political Thought, Early Modern and Contemporary Political Theory, Research Methods, Western Culture, and Constitutional Law.  He also contributes a course on Tocqueville to the Honors Program.  He is the departmental advisor for Pi Sigma Alpha, the political science honor society, the Pre-Law Advisor, and serves as a faculty advisor for the Student Government Association.  In the Spring of 2009, Dr. Sands received the SGA Outstanding Faculty Award.
 
Dr. Sands’ research interests are also wide-ranging.  He has published a book, American Public Philosophy and the Mystery of Lincolnism (University of Missouri Press, 2009) that examines the public philosophy of Abraham Lincoln and how the development of Lincoln’s ideas affected the politics of Reconstruction.  He has also published articles in Perspectives on Political Science, PS: Political Science & Politics, The Encyclopedia of U.S. Campaigns, Elections, and Electoral Behavior, and The Encyclopedia of the Supreme Court.  Dr. Sands has served as an Annual Fellow for the Jack Miller Center and is currently an Academic Partner for the Bill of Rights Institute.
