Music

Whether you want to perform, teach or work in the music business, Berry can help you reach your goals.

Three music degrees
Berry’s music program holds full membership in the National Association of Schools of Music. Degrees offered are:

  • Bachelor of Arts in music – for students interested in pursuing music performance in graduate school.
  • Music education – which leads to state certification for grades K-12 in choral and instrumental music
  • Music with elective studies in business – for those interested in a career in the music industry.

Students seeking to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in music have a focused track on performance. A combination of the general education core and music specific courses prepares students for graduate school and professional performance after college. Some required courses include music theory and history, specialized music literature studies, conducting, private lessons and performance with large ensembles.

Students seeking to pursue a Bachelor of Music in education actively participate in teaching methods and preparation, and are required to pass state certification for grades K-12 in choral and instrumental music. Courses taken by music education students are similar to those seeking performance degrees, including general education core classes, music theory and history, conducting and private lessons, but education students are also required to participate in student teaching and education courses, and to be familiar with all instrumental and voice methods.

Students seeking to pursue a Bachelor of Music with elective studies in business are amply prepared for a career in the music industry. Similar to that of a performance-based track, the music business students must participate in the general education core classes, music theory and history courses, conducting and private lessons; but also must take music industry, business classes, and, by graduation must have completed six hours of department approved music industry internships.
