A minor in sociology or anthropology will familiarize students with the core approaches and a variety of topics in their chosen discipline while providing the flexibility for individuals to acquire the expertise and tools they consider most beneficial. A student therefore may choose to take one course in the other discipline or Introduction to Women’s Studies. As well, minors will acquire the ability either to use social science theories to explain patterns in the contemporary world or to use social science research methods for collecting data about real-world phenomena. Students will choose which skill—familiarity with theoretical frameworks or with data-gathering and analysis—will be most useful for them by taking either 300 (Social Theory) or 305 (Research Methods). We recommend consulting with department faculty or the chair for suggestions regarding the exact combination of courses and to answer any questions.
