Sociology and anthropology aim at improving our understanding
of what it
means to be human by highlighting the differences and similarities
that
exist both within and between human groups. Our majors learn
how to
relate to people from a wide variety of backgrounds. Through
hands-on
activities, they develop skills for conducting ethnographic
research, data
analysis, documentary research and community-based research.
Among the
occupations the majors have chosen following graduation
are social work,
human relations, environmental advocacy, urban planning,
missions, law,
government and marketing. Others continue their education
in graduate
programs at leading universities.
Sociology and anthropology majors may pursue either a Bachelor
of Arts
or Bachelor of Science degree. Students pursuing a Bachelor
of Arts degree
must complete the foreign-language requirements for that
degree. Students
pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree must successfully complete a minimum
of six courses that fulfill the quantitative course requirements for the B.S.
degree. Though not required, Bachelor of Science majors are strongly
encouraged to take at least six hours of a foreign language as well.
