BEEF

A total of approximately 100 brood cows consisting of a purebred Angus herd and a smaller commercial herd are maintained on 500 acres of pasture. The registered Angus herd is well recognized within the purebred industry for the production of superior beef producing animals. Numerous “Pathfinder Awards” have been presented to Berry College from the American Angus Association for excellence in cattle performance. The commercial herd represents the more typical beef producing herd consisting of crossbred animals predominantly of Simmental breeding. In both herds extensive reproductive management involves the use of estrus detection and artificial insemination. A number of our top producing Angus females also undergo superovulation and embryo transfer procedures. Regardless of being purebred or commercial type, all animals are used extensively to enhance the academic programs and research opportunities for students, as well as gaining exceptional experience as student employees through the Berry College student work education program.

In addition to the pasture, an additional 85-acres of land are utilized for the production of coastal Bermuda hay. The Rollins Center itself consists of a number of buildings including a classroom/field laboratory, offices and vehicle maintenance, tool and implement storage facilities. The Rollins Center barn has extensive dry-lot and livestock working facilities to accommodate requirement for the academic and research programs. Several additional livestock working and storage facilities are strategically located to optimize animal management with minimal stress and transport.
