Clubs and Activities
The department sponsors several clubs that will allow you to get acquainted with students with interests similar to yours. The clubs provide fun, fellowship, educational opportunities, and the opportunity to perform community service.
Alpha Zeta
This organization is a chapter of the Fraternity of Alpha Zeta. Its purposes are to foster high standards of scholarship, character, leadership, and a spirit of fellowship among members. Additionally, this organization renders service to students at Berry College and promotes the profession of agriculture. Membership is open to students, faculty, and staff with appropriate qualifications.
Block and Bridle
The purpose of this organization is to promote a high scholastic standard among the students of animal science and to bring about a closer relationship among all students enrolled in colleges and universities pursuing any phase of animal science as a profession or interest.
Intercollegiate Equestrian Team
This organization promotes the understanding and principles of horsemanship, develops leadership, responsibility, and team work in the spirit of friendly competition. Members are selected for the team on a competitive basis from the Berry student community interested in horsemanship. This organization is a member of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA).
The IHSA encompasses 29 regions with more than 300 colleges and universities representing more than 6,500 riders. There is no distinction by size of the institution. Berry College competes in a region that includes Georgia, South Carolina, and Alabama. Riders can compete in both the hunt-seat (English) and stock-seat (western) divisions as individuals and as a team. The division or level in which a rider competes is based on previous experience. Each year 10 competitions are held for both hunt seat and stock seat throughout the region. The host institution provides all horses. Riders compete by draw within their level of expertise. Once the rider is mounted, he or she is in the arena being judged. There is no time allowed for schooling. This approach requires significant horsemanship skills for successful riding.
Teams and individual riders can qualify for the national championships through a point system at regional competitions. Regional champions continue to compete against other regional champions in an elimination tournament to earn a berth at the national championships.
Prevet Club
The purpose is to secure greater recognition for preliminary preparation for the study of veterinary medicine as an integral part of the school curriculum and to promote professional growth among members. Members of the organization also assist one another through transfer of knowledge and ideas to help each member in obtaining his or her goal in the field of veterinary medicine.
Quotes from our past students/members:
Fall Call-out 2006
The purpose of having Fall Call-out is to have a time when the students, faculty and staff come together at the beginning of the year and tell the tales of the summer past. We meet and welcome the in-coming freshmen, meet with old friends from the previous year or years, and have enough food for everyone to get their fill. With old friends and new, at this time we welcome the new year with much fun and celebration, and this we call Animal Science
