The Berry College Dairy: Facilities

| Free Stalls – Lactating cows, with the exception of the pasture group, live on free stalls most of the day. The free stalls have fans and misters to keep the cows cool during the summer months. They are on a flush system which is cleaned three times daily. In front of the free stalls, which are lined with sand, is where the food is laid out every morning, and throughout the day pushed up so that the cows can maintain access to it. Cows also have access to a pasture, although during summer months this is limited to night grazing | |

Parlor – The parlor was built in 2001. It has a covered holding area inside that connects into 4 herringbone milking stalls. At the base of the stalls is the pit, out of which the cows then circle out of the parlor back to pasture. The parlor connects into the tank room which has a 600 gallon tank. The milk is picked up by DFA approximately every other day. |

| Feeding Area – The feeding area is where all feed is stored and mixed for the cows. Every morning the total mixed ration (TMR) is made fresh for the lactating cows and feed is taken to the rest of the pastures as well. The TMR is made from Alfalfa Hay, Dairy Pellets and Water. Additives to maintain freshness and help with rumen balance are added as well. | |

| Pastures – The dairy has a number of pastures on both sides of the road throughout the Rollins Ruminant Research Center. These pastures are maintained by age for our growing heifers and then we have pastures for lactating, dry, springers and fresh cows. | |

| Calf Barn – The calf barn is a converted horse barn, which provides ample stall space. They are fed twice daily with a calf milk replacer, and given clean stalls and fresh water as well. | |
