Students who earn a B.S. in chemistry or biochemistry can choose from a number of career options including:  

  • Medical, pharmacy, or dental school   

  • Research/sales in pharmaceuticals   

  • Graduate Studies  

  • Education  

The Chemistry and Biochemistry majors lead students to careers in industry, medical sciences, research, or education. For both Chemistry and Biochemistry majors there are two options students may complete; a non-ACS and an ACS approved major. While the non-ACS major is intended primarily for those students who do not intend to pursue graduate or professional studies, all students planning on pursuing a career in chemistry or biochemistry will benefit from the more rigorous curriculum.
 


 

 Requirements for Chemistry Major

Berry College B. S. Degree in Chemistry

A student pursuing a B.S. in chemistry (non-ACS approved degree) must complete a minimum of 37 hours of chemistry, to include foundational and in-depth courses and some additional courses (listed below). Class descriptions are available from the course descriptions link (see above). WI classifications denote writing intensive courses.

Requirements for Teacher Certification in Secondary-School Science

Students planning to become certified to teach chemistry in Georgia public secondary schools must complete a concentration in chemistry and a minor in education. The student must be assigned an advisor in education in addition to her or his chemistry advisor. In order to become certified to teach chemistry in Georgia, students must pass the Georgia Assessments for the Certification of Educators (GACE). Regardless of the chemistry concentration chosen, enrolling in BIO 111 and two upper-level biology courses is strongly encouraged.   



The Environmental Sciences Major: Chemistry Concentration
