Berry Land Use Registration

Download Registration Form

The ELM committee has established a registration process for the responsible and safe use of Berry College's land resources. Use of the land for academic purposes, or for other appropriate uses, is encouraged. Those wishing to do so are requested to review the Rationale section and Procedures section stated below.

In addition to educational and research programs for Berry College faculty and students, the land resource is available to students and researchers from other institutions who wish to work with Berry faculty. Several other institutions have already begun programs in collaboration with Berry. Any non-Berry user must have a Berry College faculty or staff member designated on the registration form as a formal sponsor/collaborator.

Rationale for Registration Process

(as approved by ELM Committee 7 March 2001)

Article 1 . The purpose of the registration process is to:

  1. encourage and enhance the use of Berry College land for all appropriate purposes.
  2. protect the work of land users from conflicting activities.
  3. decrease the likelihood of land users making poorly informed decisions.
  4. increase the safety of people using the land.

Article 2 . Registration for the use of land resources by members of the Berry College community is voluntary, but only those activities that are registered will enjoy the protection afforded by the central registration process. Sponsors of any registered or non-registered activity will be held responsible for inappropriate use of any kind.

Article 3 . Formal approval of a registered activity is an explicit agreement that no other activity, registered or unregistered, should interfere in any way with the successful completion of the approved activity. If a potential conflict between activities arises after the first of these activities is approved, the conflict must be resolved by the registration review committee following written petition by the person(s) proposing the second activity. Such resolution must follow consultation with the sponsors of both activities. Sponsors of such activities may appeal the decision of the registration review committee by written petition to the full ELM committee.

Article 4 . It is assumed that all ongoing official activity of Berry College departments operating on the respective land areas for which they have had primary responsibility may continue without the need for registration. This applies only to those activities that commenced prior to the implementation of the registration process (7 March 2001). To receive full protection of the newly instituted process, all new activities must be registered, even if conducted by the departments that have managed the pertinent land areas prior to this date.

Procedures for Registration

(as approved by ELM Committee 7 March 2001)

  1. Registration must be made on the appropriate form.
  2. To ensure registration approval, users are encouraged to register at least 1 week prior to the activity. Keys may be checked out after registration has been approved.
  3. Registration should be made with the Office of the President, with Alan Storey serving as the point of contact.
  4. Alan Storey will seek approval from the registration review committee. This should be done by email. In most cases, the committee members will defer to the individual whose areas of responsibility are most directly affected.
  5. If a subcommittee member does not recommend approval, (s)he must give reasons for this judgment, and recommend an alternative site and/or date.
  6. Alan Storey's office will keep a calendar and record of all activities planned and completed. Upon approval, a copy of each registration form will be sent to each member of the registration review.
