Longleaf Pine Project Progress from January - April 2007 |

1) Hardwood control in core management area (30 acres; Arsenal injection). |

| 2)Fill in planting was carried out in numerous areas: 300 in “Possum Trot Plot”, 300 in “Selective Cut #2”, 600 in “Clear Cut”, 300 in “Selective Cut #1”. 300 in a 1 acre logging pit near “Selective Cut #1”. 2300 in “SAVE 2001 Area”. 4000 seedlings were planted total. 2000 of which came from Talladega Mt. LL IFC source and 2000 of the seedlings in the “SAVE 2001 Area”came from NC upper Piedmont Dixie Green. | ||
| 3) Grafting work was done in the seed orchard. The goal was 100 grafts (3 grafts x 33 different mother trees). The project began in late February. Techniques for cutting branches from tops of trees using slingshot methods and grafting were practiced. As of March 6, 2007 93 grafts have been completed. | ||
| 4) 4800 containerized seedlings were generated starting in late April from seeds collected in Oct./Nov. 2006. The project is currently in progress. | ||
| 5)Longleaf Pine Project workers assisted the physical plant and baseball team in moving longleaf pine saplings in the Longleaf Pine Seed Orchard. This was done prior to the installation of stadium lights for the baseball field. | ||
| 6) Student workers for the Longleaf Pine Project helped remove dead trees near paths or roads around the Longleaf Pine Trail that were public safety hazards. They were assisted by Land Resources personnel. | ||
| 7) On April 20-21, Dr. Cipollini and Amy Potts worked with Dan Sperling Productions on completion of shooting footage for the educational infomerial on the Longleaf Pine Project. | ||
