"Treasures of the Longleaf Pines"
bookTreasures of The Longleaf Pines Naval Stores, by Carroll B. Butler. This book shares with us the history of the once vibrant gum naval stores industry. This industry's role in the industrial growth of the South, once neglected, is given full treatment. Topics range from the production and collection of tar and pitch, the distillation process and its packaging in wood barrels. The reader experiences the challenges of transporting these heavy barrels from remote woodland locations by river or railroad to the marketplace, where the factor sells the products to the dealer with the highest bid. Numerous footnotes reflect inputs from interviews with families directly involved in the industry. These views represent all tiers of the industry from factor, turpentine operator, woodsrider, stiller, cooper, and the operator's woodman. This is a fascinating book sure to interest any historian of early industry- Amazon.com
