Longleaf Pine Project Progress

October - December 2006

  1. Prescribed burns in Southern Pine Beetle selective-cuts and clear-cuts (42 acres in November 2006) and Core Management Area (200 acres in April 2007).
  2. Seed cone collection: Over 700 cones were collected and processed from about fifty different individual trees. 
  3. Fuel analysis in preparation for prescribed burns will be conducted in summer of 2007 along with carbon monitoring.
  4. Plant seedlings in SAVE2001 Area (200/acre in 3 acres = 600), Seed Tree Cut 2005 (200/acre in 11 acres = 2200), and Possum Trot Plot (300/acre in 3 acres = 900). 4000 seedlings total on 18 acres.  
  5. Planting seedlings in Southern Pine Beetle clear cut (300/acre in 5 acres = 1500 - DONE), selective cut #1 (250/acre in 4 acres = 1000 - DONE) and selective-cut #2 (250/acre in 14 acres = 3500 - DONE).  6000 seedlings total on 23 acres.  Seven acres in selective cut #1 delayed for arsenal herbicide treatment in summer 2007and planting in Fall 2007.
