Longleaf Pine Project Progress

May - September 2007

All projects listed below are current and ongoing.

  1. Hardwood control in core management area (Arsenal injection). “SAVE Area West” and “Stand F”.
  2. Replacing and refinishing Longleaf Trail signs.
  3. 7 acres in Selective Cut #1 needs to be herbicided with site preparation level of Arsenal. This will be done by tractor/sprayer in mid- to late-summer. Before that, site needs to be prepped so as to allow access by a tractor or 4 wheeler and existing trees need to be removed and the stumps sprayed with Arsenal (hack and squirt level).
  4. Firebreak work in Selective-Cut #1. Need to maintain firebreak using Round-up herbicide.
  5. Treat all planting areas with Garlon 3a foliar spray, spot applications as needed to suppress blackberries, hardwoods, and invasive alien species. Carefully avoid spraying longleaf seedlings.
  6. Carbon monitoring and fuel analysis of all planting areas and permanent study stands. Start in June.
  7. Maintenance of longleaf grafted seed orchard (behind ball stadium).
  8. Maintenance of longleaf seedlings in nursery.
  9. Mapping and GIS work.
  10. Begin site preparation of longleaf seedling seed orchard (along Stretch Road).
