Mathematics Degree Requirements

Berry's broad-based mathematics major prepares students for graduate study or a professional career. Students may also earn a degree to teach mathematics in grades 7-12. The first two years as a math major include studies in calculus, differential equations, and linear algebra, and an introduction to proof. The students study abstract algebra, real and complex analysis, and other electives. "Special subjects" courses are also available, such as topology, knot theory, combinatorics, differential geometry, chaos theory, graph theory, and functional analysis.

Major Requirements (Mathematics)

A mathematics concentration must have a minimum of 43 semester hours in mathematics courses. The following courses are required for a major in mathematics:

CSC 120 Principles of Computer Science I (3-2-4)
MAT 201 Calculus I (4-0-4)
MAT 202 Calculus II (4-0-4)
MAT 203 Multi-Variable Calculus (4-0-4)
CSC/MAT 219 Discrete Structures (3-0-3)
MAT 303 Linear Algebra (3-0-3)
MAT 304 Differential Equations (3-0-3)
MAT 305WI Proof Structures and Techniques (3-0-3)
MAT 403WI Introduction to Abstract Algebra (3-0-3)
MAT 414
MAT 417
Real Analysis or
Complex Analysis
(3-0-3)

and 9 hours of electives among the following:

MAT 311 Probability and Statistics (3-0-3)
CSC/MAT 319 Combinatorial Mathematics (3-0-3)
MAT 414 Real Analysis (3-0-3)
MAT 417 Complex Analysis (3-0-3)
MAT 420 Advanced Topics in Mathematics (3-0-3)
MAT 498 Directed Study (V-0-V)

Minor Requirements (Mathematics)
The minor in mathematics requires a minimum of nineteen (19) hours of mathematics courses. Of these, nine (9) hours must be selected at the 300-level or above.

Suggested Course of Study | Schedule of Course Offerings

Note: The three numbers following the title of each course (ex., 3-2-4) indicate, in sequence, hours of lecture, hours of laboratory, and hours of credit. The example class will meet three hours for lecture and two hours for laboratory. Students will receive four semester hours of credit.
