Students who graduate with majors in this department have many options. Some students take routes with a particular career focus, such as computer programming or teaching mathematics in grades 7 – 12. Majors in pure mathematics might find jobs in applied area such as actuarial science or cryptography. Many employers desire to hire mathematics graduates, not because of specific content mastered, but rather because their mathematics degree indicates their analytical and problem-solving abilities in general. Many students getting their Bachelor of Science in mathematics will choose to go to graduate school to study a specialized area, such as graph theory. An undergraduate degree in mathematics is also an option for students planning to go into professional programs such as medicine or law.
While at Berry College a student majoring in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science may apply for employment doing work related to their major. Employment opportunities in the department include work as a computer lab assistant, as a mathematics tutor, as an office or research assistant for department faculty, and as a coordinator or assistant with the Mathematics League, which organizes mathematics competitions for local high schools and middle schools.
Many students work in the mathematics lab tutoring individual students. Some conduct group tutorials as supplemental instruction for specific courses. Some serve as student coordinators for mathematics contests for middle-school and high-school students. Whether grading papers or keeping a web-site updated, jobs in the department provide hands-on learning in addition to what takes place in the classroom.
Being a small department, our students and professors tend to know each other well. In providing the academic coursework and related work experience and caring about individuals, we seek to carry out the three-fold mission of Berry College—an education of the head, heart, and hands.
