Summer 2004 saw a beehive of activity in the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences at Berry College. Four students, recruited nationally joined ranks with two of our very own to do research with nationally- and internationally-recognized faculty mentors in our NSF-sponsored REU Program.*
At the end of their 10-week experience, students presented results of their research at the “Symposium in Ecology and Environmental Biology,” which was held in the Science Auditorium. Since summer, several of the projects have entered a second phase of development and may possibly lead to presentation at professional conferences and publication in scientific journals.
The symposium speakers, in order of presentation:
Mozella Bell (Southern University), “The Distribution Patterns of Coprophagus Insects at Berry College and Their Role in the Transmission of Zoonotic Protozoan Parasites.” Mentor: Dr. Bruce Conn (Berry College)
Jennifer Weaver (Tulane University), “The Role of Flies as Vectors for Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia lamblia across the Berry College Campus.” Mentor: Dr. Bruce Conn (Berry College)
Amy Gaskell (Stephen Austin University), “Hardwood Management in Restoration of Longleaf Pine Habitats: Herbicide Treatment and Prescribed Burning.” Mentor: Christopher Worrell (Berry College student lab assistant) and Dr. Martin Cipollini (Berry College)
Naomi Hollifield (Randolph-Macon Woman's College), “Effect of Interspecies Competition between the Imported Red Fire Ant and Eastern Bluebird on Bluebird Reproduction.” Mentor: Dr. Reneé Carleton (Berry College)
Rebecca Neal (Berry College), “Intraspecific Variation in Quinolizidine Alkaloids of Mamane ( Sophora chrysophila ) Seeds.” Mentor: Dr. Gary Breton and Dr. Martin Cipollini (Berry College) and Dr. Paul Banko (U.S. Geological Survey-Hawaii)
Justin Edge (Berry College) will present a full seminar this fall about his population study of coyote on the Berry College campus. Mentor for Justin's project was Dr. Chris Mowry.
