Day Seven: Observational Dive It was yet another great day in the tropics. We started the day with a drift dive on “Pete’s Reef” and the students were able to work on their fish identification. While the site provided a vast array of fish life, it also had a number of deep canyons the students were able to explore. Following the dive we had a short lecture on the origin of coral reef fishes and then lunch. The afternoon dive was an observational dive. The students picked a spot on the bottom and sat there for 20 minutes just watching the marine life. While it may have seemed like a crazy idea to them at first, after the dive everyone agreed it was a great experience and they look forward to doing it again. The afternoon lecture, done by the director of the marine lab, dealt with the current threats to the reef ecosystem. Dinner was more or less a traditional meal, so for those of you that are concerned we are not eating well; we included a picture of tonight’s menu.
