Many students have an innate desire to become a practicing
physician. Medicine has long held the promise of allowing an individual
to serve society while providing for a secure financial future. Berry
College has committed itself to offering those interested in a professional
medical degree the best possible preparation through rigorous and relevant
course work, coupled with an unparalleled support system. Berry has a
pre-medical committee who work to facilitate and monitor a student’s
academic progress. The committee also offers support through sponsored
seminars by area physicians, the drafting of letters of recommendation,
and individual counseling. The Career Development Center located on campus
coordinates with local healthcare facilities to arrange physician shadowing
opportunities. Berry graduates have gone on to attend medical schools
throughout the United States. The acceptance rate for our graduates has
been consistently high, usually exceeding 90%.
While the typical premed student at Berry majors in biology,
biochemistry, or chemistry, there is no such requirement by the medical
schools. Regardless of the student's chosen major we encourage our premeds
to take courses the committee believes have proven useful
in preparing students for the MCAT. Courses such as cellular biology,
immunology, genetics, and biochemistry are often mentioned as being important
for proper MCAT preparation. Additionally, student participation in research,
a Berry strength, is often cited as an important factor
in giving a student an advantage when being evaluated as part of an applicant
pool by the admissions committees.
In short, by offering an outstanding support network and progressive
curriculum, Berry College offers the ideal environment for those seeking
to prepare themselves for a career in medicine.
