ENG 436/COM 429 - Studies in British Culture: Identity, Nationalism and Sectarian Conflict in Great Britain and Ireland
Examine the ways in which national identities are constructed through the differing ideologies of the Anglo-Irish conflict. Study program includes stops in London, Belfast, Dublin, Derry and Galway.

$3995 all-inclusive (airfare, tuition, lodging, transfers and tours) - a recommended day trip out of Dublin will cost an additional $50
$800 deposit due March 1. Balance due April 15.
London
Day 1: Guided tour of London's best known landmarks to include West End, Piccadilly Circus and Trafalgar Square. Visit the famous Tower of London.
Day 2: Visit Greenwich via River Thames; return to London; tour Westminster Abbey.
Day 3: Lecture at University of London re: impact of and attitudes toward Irish immigration to London/Britain; tour British Museum, National Gallery; explore South Bank redevelopment; see Shakespeare production at the New Globe Theater.
Belfast
Day 1: Evening lecture re: history of the 20th/21st century conflict between the British and Irish.
Day 2: Tour Belfast, including Republican and Protestant neighborhoods, murals, barricades, as well as redevelopment in City Centre and the (now empty) seat of Northern Ireland government, Stormont. Continue on to Armagh. Evening lecture re: Belfast's and Derry's roles in the conflict.
Derry
Day 1: Guided tour of Derry and its history.
Day 2: Visit Bloody Sunday Commission exhibition in City Center and Women's Centre to view film re: children's experience of the conflict as it persists today. Lecture at University of Ulster (Derry) on conflict resolution. Take walking tour of the Bogside and key sites related to events of Bloody Sunday.
Galway
Day 1: Visit the Burren, where students will see many examples of "famine walls." Evening performance of traditional Irish music.
Day 2: Lectures at the Human Rights Centre and National University of Ireland in Galway.
Day 3: Visit Aran Islands, the last remaining area in Ireland where Irish Gaelic is the primary language.
Day 4: Visit production location of "The Quiet Man" in Cong.
Dublin
Day 1: Take "1916 Rebellion" Walking Tour. Visit Dublin Writers Museum. Evening performance of traditional Irish music.
Day 2: Optional day trip to one of two ancient sites: Newgrange or Glendalough.
Day 3: Participate in Bloomsday activities celebrating Joyce's Ulysses.
