This photo shows a man in the city of Hebron,
Palestine, producing glass. This glass is made out of raw materials or recycled
glass; it is made by melting the sand or recycled glass in an open, hot oven
and then blowing the other end of the metal stick. The room that he is working
in is not air-conditioned, and he has to sit in front of an oven all day, so
fans are used to cool the area. The transformation that the glass goes through
as it is taken out of the fire and blown into a new shape is incredible to
watch. Glass-making was first introduced in Hebron as early as 63 B.C. during
Roman rule. Hebron became famous for its glass production, which became a
tradition that is still carried out to this day. Different colored vases,
plates, cups, and jewelry are made and sold.
