This photo was taken of some children who were too shy to get too close to the Americans, although we could tell they wanted to interact with us. They were most likely orphans living with relatives or neighbors, receiving one meal of Nsima (basically cooked water and corn meal) per day. The children there were shy at first most of the time, but even while they were timid, they did not hesitate when they saw an opportunity. For example, when we had to haul five-gallon buckets of water from the well each day, the kids (usually under 12 years of age) would often take our buckets and carry them on their heads 2 to 3 miles for us. It was overwhelming to know the amount of humility and gratefulness they constantly have.
