Berry College / Fundacion Progreso Guanacaste
Summer International Program in Costa Rica
In partnership with the Fundacion Progreso Guanacaste, Berry College offers a seven-week program in the Guanacaste region of Costa Rica. Students will primarily be working as English-language tutors in primary schools close to the Hacienda Pinilla in the canton of Santa Cruz. The participating Berry students will assist classroom teachers at several grade levels all five days of the work week. At its core the program is about working with the schools to help the students get ahead in their study of English. Apart from the tutoring program, there are a limited number of positions available to work with the medical clinic and the horticultural nursery of the Hacienda Pinilla.
Participating Berry students will live with families in the towns, many of them remote, where they will be working in the schools. Roundtrip airfare from Atlanta to Liberia, food, lodging, transportation in Costa Rica and a small stipend will be provided by the Fundacion Progreso Guanacaste. All participants will be expected to take SPA 305 offered by Berry College Assistant Professor of Spanish, David Slade, who will be directing the program in Costa Rica. Students applying to the program will need to be proficient in Spanish a the intermediate level (SPA 200 or equal proficiency). This is an immersion experience that will give you the opportunity to serve in an important capacity, to learn about Costa Rican culture and to greatly enhance your Spanish language skills.
