Here is my entry for the "What is Culture?" photo contest. It is picture from a birthday fiesta of my host-nephew from my study abroad experience in Costa Rica. The kids are playing with a piñata filled with peanuts and candy. They are outside in the blazing heat, running around in the dirt and yet they are surrounded by people who love and care for them and they couldn’t be happier. What struck me most about my time there is the focus on family and children, and so I chose to present a photo of that. I had a unique connection with all of the kids in the town of Santa, Rosa Costa Rica, as I was their impromptu English teacher for seven weeks through the Fundación Progreso Guanacaste. I have never experienced anything like it; every day was so eye-opening and heart-warming. I am just grateful to have been able to teach these kids and I am continually astounded by and appreciative of all they have taught me.
