My visit to London was full of the interesting and the unexpected, but this store was still a surprise for me. It reinforced the underlying differences in culture that I had noticed in bits and broadcasted it on an ironically American sign. The bright colors and slogan reminded me of home, but the actual sign, “Poundland,” was perfectly British. This Dollar General-type store tucked snugly among the towering stone buildings of London captured a realization: In my anticipation for cultural differences, similarities took me by surprise.
