2nd place winner, Kelsey Watts: While traveling through the streets of Arusha, Tanzania, we were often stopped by cows crossing the road being led by Maasai people. The Maasai people form one of the most ancient tribes throughout the history of Tanzania. They are a beautiful group of people who live off the land in grass huts in the hills of Tanzania. One of the ways they survive is by raising cattle. Boys learn to herd the cattle by age six and by age ten, can be responsible for getting a herd across many miles all by themselves. I chose this picture because it not only shows the beauty of the land, but also of this group of people. This is probably a father with his sons teaching them what they will be doing for the rest of their lives. It is a great picture to show the culture of the area because it shows the family bond between the father and his sons as they work together. Traveling to Tanzania was such a wonderful experience because I got to witness so many different types of cultures. The Maasai people, like the ones in this picture, were one of the most beautiful groups we saw. They display a culture that has been the same for thousands of years, and continues to work for them through strong family and tribe bonds.
