Last summer I was traveling through Italy with my
boyfriend. During our stay in Florence, we decided to take a tour to the
Chianti region in Tuscany, which is where I took this photograph. While
traveling through Chianti’s rustic landscape, I was immediately captivated by
the atmosphere accredited to the Tuscan Zeitgeist,
which has been effortlessly kept alive by its laid-back and genuine
inhabitants. On the tour through this beautiful region, we were able to take
part in a wine and cheese tasting. In the midst of trying all the delicious
wines and cheeses, I realized one thing: The Chiantians “live” wine. They take
pride in producing one of the most recognized and delicious sorts of wines in
the world: The Chianti. When talking about their Chianti wine, their eyes start
to glow of happiness and their tone becomes enthralling. This in itself
establishes the character of the people and the region in which it is a part
of. However, their culture, as I see it, is not exclusively defined by wine
production. Chiantians also proudly claim to have the best cheeses and salamis.
These homemade products are so rich and full of flavor, whose success can only
be explained through the intense hours and hard labor put into its makings. It
is also through the marvelous hills, fresh air and bucolic houses that
contribute to this desirable happiness that this lively culture displays, that
one can get a true essence of this Italy. One final thought needs to be
mentioned: although we can clearly see Chianti’s beautiful landscape in this
picture, the true beauty, and perhaps more importantly, the spirit of this region is something that
needs to be experienced firsthand – something so wonderful that cannot possibly
be captured by film.
