Location
The Republic of Senegal, which achieved independence in 1960 after more than a century of French colonial rule, is one of the most democratic and developed countries in West Africa today. Senegal has a population of nearly ten million, with two million living in Dakar, the political and economic capital of Senegal.  French is the country's official language and Wolof the predominant language.  Senegal enjoys political and social stability and has a well-developed infrastructure and tourist industry. The Senegalese take great pride in their reputation for hospitality, as well as their rich cultural traditions including art, theater, music and dance.

Program of Study
This program is ideal for French and other majors. Students take five courses each semester:  three required CIEE core courses of Contemporary Senegalese Society and Culture, French language, and Wolof language; two elective courses are chosen from a selection of English or French-taught courses. All courses are taught by Senegalese faculty, many of whom hold faculty appointments at Université Cheikh Anta Diop. The Senegalese method generally requires students to take greater initiative and responsibility in a less structured environment.

Students may also complete a community service project or internship as an elective. A French language test is given upon arrival. 

Living Arrangements
All students live in a Senegalese home in a furnished room. Host families tend to view U.S. students as “adopted children” and expect them to eat meals and spend time with their family and friends. It is important to keep in mind that the Senegalese live simply and amenities such as washing machines, microwaves, and home entertainment centers are not common features. Meals are also simple and less varied than in the U.S.; rice and fish are considered staple foods in Senegal. A weekly meal stipend is given to students so that they may supplement and/or vary their diet.

Costs

Students pay Berry College semester tuition of $10,285.  Current room and board costs are $1130, insurance costs $120 and the visa fee is $50.  All fees are subject to change and other fees may apply. Excursions are included in the program fee.

Eligibility
2.75 GPA, 1 semester college French - but students seeking credit toward the French major or minor should be at the 300 level.

Additional Information
Students are required to obtain a visa for their stay in Senegal.  Students may participate in the Conversational Exchange Program with Francophone students, and week-long rural stays take place mid-semester.
