Graduated with honors from Berry (B.A.) in 1958 and then with honors from Middle Tennessee State University (M.A.) in 1966.  Shelton was the P.E. and American Government teacher, athletic director, and head basketball and baseball coach at Berry Academy 1958-65 and the P.E. instructor, basketball and baseball coach, and director of intramurals at Berry College 1965-1967.  Following his time as assistant professor and head basketball and track coach at Lynchburg College 1967-1968, Shelton went on to work as a graduate assistant while studying for Doctorate of Education at UGA from 1968-1970.  Shelton settled in as professor and administrator at Floyd College 1970-1999, at which point he retired.

              Involvement with Berry includes membership in the Martha Berry Society and the Berry Heritage Society as well as serving in a leadership role on the Alumni Council.  Shelton is also involved with church and community leadership. Community service and volunteer work include the Rome Lions Club, Lions of Georgia, reunion activities, animal rescue, first aid and CPR instruction, Cedartown Civic Center and the Cedartown Public Library.  Also notable is Shelton’s work in starting the Floyd College chapter of the National Youth Sports Program, which facilitates interaction between college athletes and underprivileged children.
