The Alumni Accent - An e-newsletter from Berry College

Hail to the chief

What new way could Dr. Ouida Dickey (50C) possibly find to be involved at Berry?

The dean of academic services and professor of business emerita recently took office as president of the Berry Alumni Association. She began her two-year term on July 1.

Assisting Dr. Dickey with the leadership of the association is a wonderful team of alumni volunteers, including:

  • Larry Sculley (65C), vice president for association awards
  • E. Stephens Tankersley (56H), vice president for alumni events
  • Jerry Shelton (58C), vice president for Berry heritage
  • Bill Roseen (78C), vice president for financial support
  • Genyth Travis (96C), vice president for institutional relations
  • Melanie Prater (91C, 99G), secretary
  • Bart Cox (92C), parliamentarian
  • Rebecca Roberts (94C), historian
  • Ed England (57C), past president

Also, we are pleased to welcome 12 newly elected Alumni Council members: Monika Cone (91C), C. Dewey Cooper (40H, 44C), Lewis Copeland (60C), Cecily Crow (94C), Russ Evans (56C), Mary Jo Thornton Fernandes (02C), Angela Maxwell (97C), Barbara Pickle McCollum (79C), Lisa D. Miller (83C), Joan Kitchens Myers (50H, 54c), Larry Osborn (63C) and Michael Thompson (87C).

Oak Hill + Ford = Family Fun

We've got the equation for a great family outing as Oak Hill and The Martha Berry Museum hosts the 2004 Ford Festival Sept. 17 and 18. Friday's activities include a gaslight parade through downtown Rome. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, you can stroll through the Oak Hill grounds and check out Fords from Model Ts to pick-up trucks and military vehicles to Lincolns.

To see photos from last year's event or to get more details, visit www.berry.edu/oakhill/ford/.

Viva Italia! Viva Venice!

From visiting the Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi to taking a gondola ride in Venice and from viewing the Leaning Tower of Pisa to being awed by the Sistine Chapel, Berry's inaugural alumni travel program was a resounding success.

See highlights from the trip at www.berry.edu/alumni/ItalyTrip/Italytrip.asp, and watch for future trips to be advertised in Berry magazine.

Biologists study in
breathtaking Belize

Students in Dr. Bill Davin's Coral Reef Ecology course studied at Ambergris Caye in Belize. While there, they explored the incredible surroundings of the longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere.

Find out more about their studies and see picture highlights from the trip at www.berry.edu/academics/science/offcampus/belize/2004/.

Wishing you well, friend

Gubernatorial appointments

Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue tapped two members of the Berry community to serve on state boards.

Trustee Glenn Cornell (62C), who recently retired as commissioner of the Georgia Department of Economic Development, was named to the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame.

Board of Visitors member Sunny Park, president, CEO and founder of General Building Maintenance, Inc., was appointed to the Georgia Ports Authority.

How do you get to Carnegie Hall? Practice!

That plan has certainly paid off for pianist Roberto McCausland Dieppa (81C), who will be presenting a solo recital in Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall on Oct. 29.

Congratulations Candidate Chris

Chris Bouchard (80C) won the Republican Primary for Georgia House District 38 in South Cobb County. He will face Democrat incumbent Alisha Thomas-Morgan in the November General Election. Learn more about his campaign at www.chrisforcobb.com.
