Office of Alumni Relations

Chapter Minutes - East Tennessee Chapter

July 17, 2010

What a delightful day and superb location for our 3rd chapter meeting this year. Everyone gathered at the lakeside home of Jimmy and Luci Bell in Kingston, and were in awe of the picturesque lakeside view and their beautiful home. It appeared to be an exhilarating time for all 22 who attended.

Jimmy had done a wonderful job grilling barbecued ribs for our lunch. The ribs and the many covered dishes that everyone brought were superb. Along with the great food was plenty of enjoyable conversation with everyone discussing the latest news. In addition, there was a surprise birthday cake for Frances Barnett and Peggy Tillery who have July birthdays.

Following lunch, Luci, president, had everyone assemble for our business meeting. She began by recognizing our special guests: Chris Waters, Director of Alumni Relations at Berry, and Barbara McCollum, newly elected Alumni Association President. Barbara spoke briefly about Alumni Weekend, saying there were over 500 in attendance. She seemed quite delighted to say the Work Week had been a big success with around 20 crews for working all over campus.

Luci said the first order of business was to install the chapter officers for 2010 & 2011 with Barbara presiding. All officers were present and installed. They were elected in January and the names appear in the January minutes.

Chris brought us up to date on happenings at Berry. She emphasized how the additional new dorms and other restorations are enabling Berry to increase its enrollment. So many students are choosing to work - 80 to 90% work. Scholarships and the work program are enabling them to attend.

Chris described the picturesque addition outside of Krannert Center, called Kilpatrick Commons, with waterfalls, a walk-across bridge and spacious grounds for walking. She further stated that plans are under way for the dedication of the Teddy Roosevelt Cabin Centennial. They plan to have a re-enactment of Roosevelt's visit when the cabin was built.

Grace Johnson, treasurer, said that a total of $105 was taken up at this meeting and will be added to our chapter treasury.

Several bags of canned, boxed foods, etc. were brought and will be donated by Mary Guthrie to the Dandridge Food Pantry.

At Luci's request and unanimous approval, Peggy Tillery was made an honorary chapter member. Peggy is a long-standing friend of Mary Guthrie and has been attending our chapter meetings faithfully for almost SIX years. She has also attended Work Week for FIVE years. Peggy did not attend Berry, but has become one of us!

Luci thanked Chris and Barbara and each one attending for their presence today. The meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted, Mary Shurling Guthrie, 53C
