More than 570 Berry alumni returned home to their alma mater May 20-22 as the Berry Alumni Association celebrated Alumni Weekend 2011.
The weekend opened with the annual Alumni Awards and Golden Guard Gala in the Krannert Center’s Spruill Ballroom. Honored guests included the 2011 recipients of Berry’s Distinguished Alumni Awards, as well as the newest inductees into the Golden Guard, a special distinction reserved for alumni who have been out of school at least 50 years.
This year’s award winners included Jimmy T. Bell (60C), who claimed the Distinguished Achievement Award; Jack A. Jones (57C), recipient of the Distinguished Service Award; R. Lee Jennings (85C) and Lisa D. Miller (83C), both recipients of the Entrepreneurial Spirit Award; and Casey T. Smith (00C), Outstanding Young Alumnus.

President Steve Briggs and his wife Brenda were named as Honorary Alumni in a surprise presentation.
The events featured the first ever Young Alumni Weekend celebrations for those who graduated from Berry in the past 10 years.
Approximately 120 Young Alumni celebrated with activities including a mixer, service projects, intramurals and a “Party on the Green” at Oak Hill.
There were also reunions for the high school, college and academy classes of 1946, 1951, 1953, 1956, 1961 and 1966. The reunion classes, including all those holding reunions since the last Alumni Weekend, set a record this year for the amount of alumni donations given to Berry, a total of $2,730,031.
Alumni Weekend closed with a special processional march from Hamrick Hall to Frost Chapel for the high school and academy alumni’s Sunday morning service. At the College Chapel, guests enjoyed a special Alumni Choir performance led by Alumni Choral Director and Honorary Alumnus Ross Magoulas. Guest minister Bill Pardue (02C) presided.
