Mountain Memories

Berry College welcomed about 7,500 alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff and friends to Mount Berry recently for the annual Mountain Day celebration.

The celebration of Martha Berry's birthday included a golf scramble benefiting the golf team, and the annual student competitions in the Mountain Day Olympics. Students showed off their dramatic talents in a theatre production of “Moonlight and Magnolias.”

Saturday’s celebration began with a 5K Run and 2-Mile Health Walk, followed by a memorial tribute to Miss Berry organized by the Daughters of Berry. Berry Interim College Chaplain and Pastor of Mount Berry Church Jonathan Huggins presided.

The featured speaker for the Mountain Day Convocation Service in Frost Chapel was Laura Sutton who graduated magna cum laude with degrees in management and marketing from Berry in May 2009. Sutton served as the Student Government Association president, and a freshman mentor while a student at Berry. She earned her master’s degree in education from Vanderbilt University in May and currently works as a human capital analyst for Deloitte Consulting in Atlanta.

The Grand March, one of the main events of the day, was also one of the largest in recent memory. For those who missed the festivities, you can still go to www.berry.edu/vmtnday for video of the march.

Families enjoyed live music, snow cones, inflatables and games. Other weekend highlights included intercollegiate soccer and volleyball games.
