The Steven J. Cage Athletics & Recreation Center

Home Of Berry Basketball and Volleyball

The Cage Center Panoramic

Berry College's men's and women's basketball and women's volleyball teams play the brand-new, state of the art Steven J. Cage Athletics and recreation center. The facility is not only the home of Berry basketball and volleyball it also houses the main student gym, a multipurpose athletic court, racquetball courts and the performance gym (where the matches/games are hosted) in a 1,900+ seat arena that also features a concourse section. Also housed within the facility are the offices for the departments of athletics and kineseology.

After playing at Richards Gym in both 2003 and 2004, Berry's volleyball team will moved into Ford Gym in 2005 to enjoy the contagious home atmosphere that the basketball teams have been enjoying for years.  After making the move to Ford the Berry volleyball team posted a record of 82-37 over their three years in the Ford Gym.

The Vikings basketball had called Ford Gym home for 45 years beginning with the 1962-63 season. The gym itself had a seating capacity of just over 1,000 and was an impressive example of English Gothic architecture.  The gym and a complex of castle-like Gothic buildings nearby were built with donations from Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ford in the 1920s.

The Vikings have gotten off to a great start. The teams have combined to go 6-4 in the new building for a .600 winning percentage. The women's team has done especially well going 4-1 in the new facility. The other good record for the Vikings is that the teams both beat Shorter in the first Berry vs Shorter games in The Cage. The women beat Shorter 55-54 in the first rivalry game in The Cage. Then the men edged the Hawks 85-75 in overtime.

Randal Goble is the first director of The Cage Center. To arrange any events in The Cage please contact him 706-238-7798 or rgoble@berry.edu.
