Paige Banham allowed only the penalty kick to beat her during the match.
October 28, 2006
MOUNT BERRY, Ga. ... A penalty kick goal by Olina Sigurgeirsdottir was all the scoring that occured in the Southern States Athletic Conference semifinal match at Berry. The loss drops Berry to 11-6 this season, while AUM improves to 12-7 this season.
The Vikings out shot the Lady Senators 14-6 in the match, including an 8-4 edge in the first half. However, despite the advantage in attempts both teams mustered only one shot on goal in the first half. The best opportunity of the period came when Paige Banham stuffed a break-away shot by Bethany Wansley.
In the second half it was more of the same as both teams had significant midfield possession but could not generate much in the attacking third of the field. The goal came as a result of AUM finding late-substitute Tamisha Darrell open on the wing near the edge of the Berry penalty area, Darrell dribbled towards the Berry goal but was cut down after making a shot fake. The AUM shooter Sigugeirsdottir placed the ball up the middle to give the Lady Senators the lead.
Jennifer Davis in the AUM goal made two saves to earn the shutout. Berry's Banham made a pair of saves in the match, allowing only the penalty kick to beat her during the 90 minutes.
The Lady Senators will meet the Lady Flames in tomorrow's SSAC Tournament Championship match. Lee beat Shorter 10-0 in today's other semifinal. The final will be held at noon instead of 1 p.m. as scheduled due to daylight restrictions and time changes.
