Megan Cheatham Becomes All-Time Assist Leader as Volleyball Splits at Emory Tournament

ATLANTA -- Megan Cheatham became Berry volleyball's all-time leader in career assists as the team split a pair of matches at the Emory Halloween Tournament on Saturday. Berry (14-14) beat LaGrange in straight sets, before falling in three sets to Randolph Macon.
The Lady Vikings downed LaGrange 25-9, 25-15 and 25-22. However, the team could not overcome Randolph Macon and lost 21-25, 20-25 and 23-25.
"It was really appropriate that Megan set her own personal best and set the Berry career assist record this weekend," said Berry head coach Mika Robinson. "She did an excellent job running our offense and putting our hitters in good positions to score. She has had a tremendous senior year."
LaGrange
Cheatham came into the match against LaGrange with 2,500 career assists and needed just four assists to become the schools all-time leader in that department. The senior from Peachtree City, Ga. did more than that and tallied 22 assists total in the match.
She helped get several different players involved in the match, including freshman Claressa Brekke, who both finished the match with a team-high 12 kills and a .346 hitting percentage. The Lady Vikings also had a strong match at the service line as Jamie Miller had four aces and Cheatham and Kristin Hammock both had three aces.
"It was a fun to see so many of our younger players make big contributions in this match," said Robinson.
Miller led Berry with 12 digs in the match, while Hammock had nine digs. Cheatham also helped out on the defensive end with five digs of her own.
Randolph Macon
Cheatham followed her record-setting effort with another strong performance as she added 30 more digs to add to her record with a total of 2,552 career assists at Berry. Cheatham also ranks third in career aces at Berry and added one to her tally against Randolph Macon.
Freshman Allison Lewen led the Berry offense with 11 kills in the match and a .500 hitting effort. Senior Leah Thomson also had a strong match adding nine kills of her own.
"Randolph Macon is a solid team," said Robinson. "We struggled to maintain our level play throughout the match. Unfortunately, we had some injuries and illnesses catch up with in our fifth match of the week."
Hammock led Berry's defense with 20 digs. Thomson and Cheatham also defended the floor well with 15 and nine digs respectively. Berry served well in the match as Hammock had a pair of aces, and Thomson and Cheatham each added an ace each.
Berry will finish the season on Friday with a match in Montgomery, Ala. against Faulkner at 7 p.m.
