Classroom Performance Systems - Security Practices

The use of CPS on a classroom computer requires an additonal level of caution in protecting student data. CPS needs to run on the local machine, thus potentially leaving student data (stored in a database) vulnerable. If you are using a laptop to run CPS, it is also prudent to take the following steps to protect student data.

Each account is associated with a database, while by default eInstruction does not prompt users to password protect the database, it is necessary to protect student data. Follow the directions below to set up a password on the database.

Since classroom computers are a shared resource, and multiple instructors may have databases stored on the computer, please take caution in ensuring that it is your database that you are working with. If an instructor used CPS before you, you will need to close out of his/her database before accessing yours. Each instructor will have to set up a password separately for his/her database.

Creating a Password for Your Class Database:
1. Open the CPS program by clicking on the icon on the computer desktop (if on a classroom computer)

2. Open your class database.

3. Click on Settings at the top left of the screen

4. Select "Passwords" from the drop-down list.

5. An Edit Password dialog box should appear on the screen.

6. Check the box next to "Enable Password Protection for this CPS Database".

7. Create a password where prompted.

8. Reenter the password where promtped.

9. Create a password hint question. (This is important because if you forget the password and do not enter a hint question, you cannont access the database).

The next time you attempt to open the class database, you will be asked to enter this password.

If an instruction used CPS prior to your class, the following directions tell you how to access your database.

1. If an Enter Password dialog box appears on the screen, do not enter your password- Clikc Cancel

2. Choose Open an Existing CPS Database and click OK.

3. Choose your class database and click on Open.

4. Enter your password and hit OK.
