Biographical Information: Marcus Gordon Keown was born in Walker County, Georgia on October 20, 1881 and graduated from the Boys Industrial School in 1905. Following the death of Martha Berry, Mr. Keown was named the acting director of the Schools as he oversaw the transition of the Berry Schools into a new era. He also worked as a cashier (1907), “Ye Country Store” manager (1910), and he was a postmaster and alumni trustee. Mr. Keown was very instrumental in purchasing property for the Berry Schools. He died in 1956.
Description: The bulk of the collection's material is donor correspondence from Marcus Gordon Keown’s tenure as Acting Director of the Berry Schools. This includes appeals for money and responses from individuals, businesses, and foundations. Martha Berry's donor correspondence during January and February 1942 is interspersed within this series. Letters from 1942 also include condolences following Miss Berry 's death and letters congratulating Mr. Keown in his new position of Acting Director. Container and folder list available by request.
