Biographical Information: Berry College organized the Georgia Beta Chapter of the national Alpha Chi honor society in the spring of 1969. Only those students in the upper tenth percentile of the junior or senior class are eligible for membership. The Beta Chapter of Alpha Chi at Berry was the second chapter to be organized in Georgia and represents the highest scholastic honor a Berry student can receive. Dr. Jorge A. Gonzalez served as the first sponsor, as well as Vice President of the National Council. In Spring 2003 the Berry College Alpha Chi chapter was dissolved and replaced by the Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society.
Description: Folder 1 contains three faculty lectures—given by D. Joyce Jackson, Dr. D. Dean Cantrell, and Dr. Gloria Shatto—presented annually from 1977 to 1980. Folder 2 contains the signatures of inductees from 1969 to 1988. The rolls are separated into groups of junior, senior, and former junior member inductees. Folder 3 contains minutes for Alpha Chi meetings from 1969 through 1989. Minutes list new inductees and cover topics such as scholarships, delegations to conventions, and elections for officers, faculty sponsors, and annual faculty lecturers. Also included in this folder is the Report on Alpha Chi Convention 1973 by Guadalupe Sanchez and Richard Kauffman. Folder 4 contains correspondence and certificates for the years 1980 to 1982. Folder 5 contains a letter from Robert L. Geisel, Alpha Chi sponsor, written to the Berry community on December 6, 1994. Also included is a membership list of active members, the November Alpha Chi newsletter, and information on scholarships and fellowships. Arrangement :
The contents of each folder are arranged chronologically. Original order of the collection was maintained. Folder 4 contains items removed from the Vertical File, all of which were donated by Tim Howard (Treasurer and Acting Secretary during 1980-1981 and President from 1981-1982) except for the January 20, 1982 correspondence.
