Organizational Information: The formation of the Inter-Society Council, which was composed of the presidents of student organizations on campus, under the guidance of President James Armour Lindsay in 1946 provided the foundation for the student government association. During the 1955-1956 school year separate men and women's student government associations were formed, and the first constitution written in 1957. A coed student government was not formed at Berry College until 1965 as an affiliate of the Southern Universities Student Government Association (SUSGA). Beginning in fall 1966, the student government association became more active as representatives attended workshops and meetings of the SUSGA. The following year, SGA elected three officers to be paid in part for services performed.
Description: The bulk of the collection are the minutes from weekly SGA meetings dating from 1966 to 2000; however, those from fall 1967 to fall 1977 are not present. Minutes cover such topics as student committee reports, Mountain Day projects, treasury reports, and student concerns (dorm life, traffic, etc.). Attendance sheets are included for the years spring 1978 through spring 1987. The collection also contains the agendas for the weekly SGA meetings from 1982 to 2000, including drafts and final copies of resolutions and proposals. The resolutions and proposals were made to the college administration and trustees from 1987-1996 which reflect the changing concerns of students on campus, particularly in regard to dormitory improvements, scheduling, tuition, etc. Constitutions, SGA handbooks, and committee subject files are also included. Handbooks are general handbooks for SGA representatives, the committee chair, the secretary and on parliamentary procedures. Other information on the Student Government Association can be found in the Vertical File under the subject heading Student Activities.
Arrangement :
Minutes are arranged chronologically in original order. Agendas are also kept in the original order - chronologically - and sometimes overlap reflecting different provenances (such as the secretary's versus the president's papers). Original order was not maintained during the processing of the resolutions; they are now arranged chronologically. Constitutions are arranged chronologically in original order, and the committee subject files are arranged alphabetically.
