Organizational Information: The Daughters of Berry was organized in the fall of 1939 with members consisting of female graduates and wives of Berry graduates. This organization was formed to raise money to fund a museum and to preserve the ideals, traditions, and history of Berry. The Daughters of Berry worked to preserve artifacts, letters, buildings, and other historical items associated with Martha Berry and the Berry Schools. They helped raise money to establish the Martha Berry Museum which opened in 1972. According to the organization's 1972 revised constitution, “the aims of this organization shall be to preserve the traditions of the Berry Schools, to foster the ideals of our founder, to sponsor a fund to aid in the support of the museum, and to further the interests of the Berry Schools whenever possible."
Description: This collection contains documents and other miscellaneous information collected by the Daughters of Berry.
Box 1 of the collection contains a loose accumulation of handwritten and typed original recipes used for a cookbook, Favorite Recipes of the Daughters of Berry. This cookbook, first published in 1950, was one of many fund raising efforts by the Daughters of Berry. The cookbook is available in the Berry College Archives, call number TX 715 .B480. Three additional issues of the cookbook were published in 1957, 1975, and 2004.
Box 2 of the collection contains minutes of meetings of the Daughters of Berry from 1947-1960 and 1984-1999. The 1996-1999 minutes also contain committee reports submitted during the meetings. The remainder of the collection includes miscellaneous correspondence and documents including twenty-three pieces of correspondence from 1980-1982, four pieces of correspondence from 1994-96, various drafts of the organization's constitution, and a pencil etching. Other documents include an essay from Dr. G. Leland Green and a 1997-98 budget report.
The Daughter of Berry Scrapbooks were removed from the collection and are housed in the Berry College Archives Scrapbook collection.
