Berry College Trustee Named CEO of Sally Ride Science

Sally Ride Science, a science education company focused on igniting interest in science and science careers, has chosen Sheryle Bolton as the new Chief Executive Officer.

A Berry College Board of Trustee, Bolton is an experienced corporate executive and business-strategy consultant who brings with her years of experience in the public and private sectors, as well as an acute understanding of the education market.

Sally Ride, best known as America's first woman in space, founded Sally Ride Science in 2001 to create high-quality science programs and materials that educate, entertain, engage, and inspire. Ride served as President and Chief Executive Officer for 11 years, until her death in July 2012.

“We are thrilled to have Sheryle join our team at Sally Ride Science and lead us forward,” said Tam O'Shaughnessy, co-founder, board director, and Chief Operating Officer of Sally Ride Science. “Sheryle brings a wealth of talent, brainpower, and experience. We are eager to start working with her.”

Since its inception, Sally Ride Science has been a leader in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education. Building on a suite of successful products, Sally Ride Science has also created innovative programs and partnerships that have reached more than one million students and teachers nationwide.

The company's Board of Directors selected Bolton based on her extensive business experience and passion for science and technology. She immediately stood out as a leader who embraces Ride's vision and has the skills and energy needed to guide the company to new heights.

“Sally Ride Science is at the forefront of the STEM education movement,” Bolton said. “I am excited for the opportunity to further Dr. Ride's legacy of inspiration and leadership while also developing new opportunities for growth and innovation.”

Bolton is an experienced corporate executive and business strategy consultant with a passion for bringing innovation to science and technology education. She was previously CEO of Scientific Learning Corporation, an educational technology company that develops scientifically validated reading programs based on neuroscience research. As CEO, she led the growth of the company from pre-product launch to a highly successful IPO. She also has extensive experience as a Director of private and public corporations in technology and financial services.

Earlier in her career, Bolton was an executive at HBO and Rockefeller & Co., and an investment banker at Merrill Lynch. Recently, Directors & Boards magazine named her a “Director to Watch.” Watermark, a premier Silicon Valley organization for technology executives, honored her as a “Woman Who Has Made Her Mark.” Stanford Business School published two cases about her career for use in the Entrepreneurial Studies program. And her Harvard Business School classmates honored her with a “Making a Difference” award for bringing neuroscience research to reading.

Bolton holds a B.A. in English and an M.A. in Linguistics from the University of Georgia and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. She was a member of the Berry Board of Visitors from 2004 to 2006 and has served on the Board of Trustees since 2006.
